El Salvador expects busy travel season during August patron saint holidays

El Salvador’s main international gateway, Monseñor Óscar Arnulfo Romero International Airport (SAL), is served by a range of carriers including United, American, Delta, Spirit, Avianca, Copa, Volaris, Aeromexico, Iberia and TAG Airlines. The connectivity makes the country easily reachable from North America, Central and South America and, to a lesser extent, Europe.

From August 1 to August 6 the nation celebrates the patron‑saint festivities known as Vacaciones Agostinas. The holiday period drives a surge in domestic travel: hotels fill quickly, beach towns such as La Libertad, El Tunco and Sunzal see higher demand, and popular attractions—including Santa Ana Volcano, the Ruta de Las Flores towns (Juayúa, Apaneca, Ataco, etc.) and the colonial city of Suchitoto—experience larger crowds and slower traffic. Visitors are advised to book accommodation in advance, start early for outdoor activities because of rain‑season storms, and expect longer travel times on roads leaving San Salvador. The overlap of the holiday with the rainy season further emphasizes the need for flexible planning.
