Spanish airlines expand network, boost El Salvador tourism
Entities: Air Europa · Jorge Restrepo · Barranquilla · Pedro Sánchez · Alejandro Char
Overview
Building on the late‑June launch of Madrid–San Salvador flights by Avianca, Plus Ultra, Air Europa and Tag Airlines, Spanish carriers have kept widening intercontinental routes. Air Europa introduced a three‑times‑weekly Madrid–Johannesburg Boeing 787 service on 24 June 2026, linked to a CemAir interline for onward travel to Cape Town, Durban and Port Elizabeth. The airline also restored Madrid–Tel Aviv with four weekly 787s, planning a rise to six by August and a 25 % fuel‑use reduction. Iberia’s July schedule added a 5 % capacity lift, delivering more than 3 million seats across 16 945 flights and new European destinations such as Bucharest and Tivat under its “Plan de Vuelo 2030”. In November 2026 Iberia will operate a daily Madrid–Salerno A320 service, supplying roughly 10 800 seats and expanding its Italian network to twelve cities. In El Salvador, Iberojet will start two weekly nonstop flights from Madrid and Barcelona to San Óscar Arnulfo Romero International Airport in September, expected to double Spanish tourist arrivals. Turkish Airlines, which plans to raise its Istanbul–Johannesburg and Istanbul–Cape Town frequencies to 20 weekly flights in late October, cemented a codeshare with South African Airways. The agreement places TK codes on SAA‑operated services across southern Africa and SA codes on Turkish flights linking Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban with Istanbul, Paris, London and Frankfurt, further integrating the two carriers’ networks.
