El Salvador farmers warn of locust infestation risk

Agricultural producers in El Salvador are warning of a potential locust infestation driven by high temperatures and prolonged drought conditions. The pest poses a significant threat to various crops, particularly corn and beans, with the capacity to affect up to 400 different plant species.

In the eastern region and the department of San Vicente, farmers are monitoring the situation closely. Some producers have indicated they are prepared to use pesticides to prevent reproduction during these dry periods. The Regional International Organization for Agricultural Health (OIRSA) classifies these locusts as a major agricultural pest in Central America.
