Overview

Agricultural producers in El Salvador are facing significant threats to food security due to environmental and biological factors. In late July, the Cámara Salvadoreña de Pequeños y Medianos Productores Agropecuarios (CAMPO) warned of a potential production shortfall for maize and beans. Luis Treminio, president of CAMPO, noted that while producers have secured certain quantities, a deficit of up to 10 million quintals of maize could occur. Treminio cited the impact of El Niño and upcoming drought conditions as primary drivers of this risk.

By mid-August, the situation escalated as farmers reported a heightened risk of locust infestations. Driven by high temperatures and prolonged drought, particularly in the eastern region and San Vicente, these pests threaten corn, beans, and up to 400 other plant species. Producers have indicated they may use pesticides to prevent pest reproduction during these dry periods.
