El Salvador issues life sentences to MS-13 members amid prison crisis

In El Salvador, the Fourth Organized Crime Court in San Salvador has issued life sentences to Josué Germain González Mejía and Giovanni Andrés Hernández for membership in a terrorist organization. The ruling is part of a broader crackdown on the Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) gang, resulting in 45-year sentences for 26 gang members and 30-year sentences for 69 others linked to 10 different MS-13 cliques.

Simultaneously, human rights concerns are mounting regarding the nation's security model. The organization Socorro Jurídico Humanitario has documented 575 deaths in state custody without convictions since the implementation of the state of exception. Activists report that many detainees have suffered from severe health issues, including irreversible kidney failure due to lack of medical care and hydration.

In response to the mass incarceration of over 93,000 people, President Nayib Bukele is evaluating the early and conditional release of approximately 50% of prisoners accused of charges with “menor responsabilidad” (lesser responsibility). Critics argue this move highlights an institutional failure to accurately determine guilt during the initial sweeps.
