El Salvador maize consumption drops to 9.79 million quintals

The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG) in El Salvador reported a significant decline in national maize consumption. According to data from the Cid Gallup polling firm, annual consumption has dropped from 22 million quintals to 9.79 million quintals over a three-year period.

Despite this reduction in demand, the MAG projects that domestic production will be sufficient to meet national needs. The institution expects to produce up to 12 million quintals of maize and 1.9 million quintals of beans this year, even as crops face challenges from drought. These figures are intended to assist in national planning and decision-making processes.
