Measles Cases Surge in Japan and Latin America as Honduras Ends Travel Vaccine Requirement
Japan's Ministry of Health reported 529 confirmed measles cases this year, with five new cases recorded in the week to 14 June, bringing the total to about 3.7 times the same period last year.
In Peru's Junín region, health officials warned of a possible measles spread after an imported case passed through the area. The regional health director announced an intensive vaccination drive using more than 50,000 doses, targeting contacts and vulnerable neighborhoods within 24 hours of suspect identification.
El Salvador confirmed four additional imported measles cases, raising its total to 23. No local transmission has been recorded for three decades, and the health ministry continues a special vaccination campaign for infants aged six to eleven months.
Honduras' Secretariat of Health announced that, starting 25 June 2026, travelers will no longer need to present proof of measles vaccination to leave the country, though vaccination is still recommended, especially for travel to areas with active virus circulation.
