Measles surge across the Americas reaches critical levels

Overview

The measles outbreak across the Americas has reached critical levels. The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) reports that Mexico has recorded 12,922 cases in 2026, marking its highest incidence since 2004. Since the outbreak was recognized in February 2025, the Mexican Ministry of Health has confirmed 19,536 total cases and 47 deaths.

In Mexico, the Ministry of Health reports that transmission is showing a downward trend following a national strategy that has administered over 36 million vaccine doses. However, a localized outbreak persists in Veracruz, particularly in Xalapa. Governor Rocío Nahle García has called for increased vaccination of children aged zero to 12 to combat the spread.

In South America, health authorities are managing rising cases linked to international travel. In Bolivia, the Departmental Health Service (Sedes) has activated a contingency phase in La Paz following 12 recorded cases, nine of which are active. The outbreak has notably affected university students, though officials reported difficulties at one private university where restricted access to student lists hindered contact tracing.

In Peru, the Regional Health Directorate (DIRESA) in Puno is working to address a vaccination coverage gap of approximately 60%. Director Augusto Delgado Aza stated the goal is to reach a 90% to 95% coverage rate to mitigate propagation risks. Meanwhile, Colombia has identified 15 imported cases in 2026, and Brazil has reported three cases originating from Peru.

To address regional risks, Bolivia and Peru have launched ‘Andean Vaccination Week’ at the border in Puerto Mayor de Carabuco, La Paz. This binational initiative uses mobile brigades to provide prioritized care to high-risk groups, such as children under five, to prevent outbreaks of measles and diphtheria within inter-border corridors.
