El Salvador prepares for 2027 elections with presidential re-election

El Salvador is preparing for unprecedented general elections scheduled for February 28, 2027. Following constitutional reforms approved in 2025, the upcoming vote will simultaneously elect the president, legislative deputies, and municipal authorities. These reforms also enabled consecutive presidential re-election, extended presidential terms from five to six years, and eliminated the second-round runoff.

President Nayib Bukele, running under the Nuevas Ideas banner alongside Vice President Félix Ulloa, is the leading figure in the race. The opposition includes Mayteé Iraheta of the Nationalist Republican Alliance (ARENA) and Dr. Rafael Aguirre of the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN).

To facilitate participation, the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) is expanding voting access for the Salvadoran diaspora. The TSE plans to enable 92 polling stations across 29 countries, a 14% increase from the 2024 election cycle. The United States will host the largest concentration of these centers with 53 locations.
