Overview

As El Salvador approaches the February 28, 2027, general elections, the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) is implementing significant structural changes. Following 2025 constitutional reforms, the upcoming vote will simultaneously elect the president, legislative deputies, and municipal authorities. These reforms have extended presidential terms from five to six years, eliminated second-round runoffs, and enabled consecutive presidential re-election.

President Nayib Bukele, running under the Nuevas Ideas banner with Vice President Félix Ulloa, remains a leading figure. He faces opposition from Mayteé Iraheta (ARENA) and Dr. Rafael Aguirre (FMLN).

To accommodate the electorate, the TSE is expanding diaspora voting access. President Roxana Soriano announced that 92 voting centers will be established across 29 countries, representing an increase of 11 centers compared to the 2024 cycle. The United States will host 53 of these locations. In Europe, 12 centers will be available, including three in Italy.

For the 2027 process, Salvadorans residing overseas will have two voting methods: remote internet voting and in-person electronic voting. Notably, the new electoral scheme will include diaspora representation in the Legislative Assembly for the first time.

In preparation for the election cycle, the Salvadoran Legislative Assembly has ratified an agreement with the United States to reactivate the Peace Corps program, which will deploy American volunteers to support community projects in agriculture, education, and health.
