El Salvador sets 2027 election calendar and diaspora voting details

El Salvador’s Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) has announced the formal electoral calendar for the general elections scheduled for February 28, 2027. The registration period for candidates for the Presidency, Vice Presidency, and the Legislative Assembly will begin on October 1, 2026, and run for 50 days, concluding on November 19, 2026.

Registration for municipal council candidates will take place separately between November 9 and November 19, 2026, through Departmental Electoral Boards. The TSE noted that political parties must submit complete lists of candidates, as incomplete filings will be deemed inadmissible under the Electoral Code.

Regarding the Salvadoran diaspora, the National Registry of Natural Persons (RNPN) reports that over 1 million citizens living abroad are eligible to vote. Approximately 85% of these voters have registered their foreign addresses, allowing them to use a remote internet voting system between January 30 and February 28. However, those who have not updated their national identity document (DUI) to reflect a foreign residence must vote in person at designated electronic voting centers in the United States and other host nations.
