Overview

El Salvador’s Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) has officially approved the decree to convene the general elections scheduled for February 28, 2027. The elections will determine the presidency, vice presidency, Legislative Assembly, and municipal councils.

As of September 15, 2026, the electoral registry includes over 6.5 million eligible voters, with approximately 982,682 residing abroad. For the Salvadoran diaspora, the TSE has outlined two voting methods: remote internet voting for citizens with a registered foreign address on their national identity document (DUI), and in-person electronic voting at 92 designated centers across 29 countries, including 53 locations in the United States. Under the new framework, Salvadorans living abroad will also elect six deputies through their own constituency.

Candidate registration for national offices is set to begin on October 1, 2026. President Nayib Bukele is seeking a third consecutive term, facing potential challengers from the right-wing ARENA party, such as Mayteé Iraheta, and the left-wing FMLN, represented by Rafael Aguirre.

To improve electoral integrity, the TSE is partnering with UN Women and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to develop protocols to prevent and address political violence against women. This initiative involves six institutions working to ensure safe political participation through prevention campaigns, risk analysis, and monitoring systems.
