El Salvador tourism expands as security reforms and new Madrid flight boost growth

President Nayib Bukele’s security turnaround has reshaped El Salvador’s image, opening previously inaccessible regions and spurring a rapid rise in visitor numbers. The government says the shift is unlocking opportunities for both locals and international travelers.

About 3,500 tourism enterprises—85% of them micro, small and medium‑sized—are being brought into a sustainable ecosystem with certification and ongoing training. Tourism Minister Morena Valdez said, “We are working to conquer markets that previously did not know us or associated us with insecurity.” A new Air Europa route will link Madrid and San Salvador from Dec 17, providing a direct gateway for European and Asian tourists. The growing portfolio now includes surf events on the Pacific coast and cultural attractions in the capital, further diversifying the country’s appeal.
