El Salvador TSE officializes 2027 general elections

The Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) of El Salvador has officially approved the decree to convene the 2027 general elections. Scheduled for February 28, 2027, the elections will determine the president, vice president, deputies of the Legislative Assembly, and municipal council members.

As of September 15, 2026, the electoral registry includes over 6.5 million eligible voters, with approximately 982,682 residing abroad. For citizens living overseas, the TSE will offer two voting methods: remote internet voting for those with a Salvadoran DUI registered abroad, and in-person electronic voting at designated centers for others. The TSE plans to establish 92 voting centers across 29 countries, including 53 locations in the United States. Additionally, under the new electoral framework, Salvadorans abroad will have their own constituency to elect six deputies.

In a separate initiative to improve electoral integrity, the TSE is collaborating with UN Women and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to establish protocols to prevent and address political violence against women. This project aims to create a coordinated response involving six institutions to ensure political participation free from violence, including the implementation of prevention campaigns, risk analysis, and the creation of statistical systems to monitor women's electoral participation.
