Elbtower construction in Hamburg faces renewed uncertainty

The construction of the Elbtower in Hamburg faces renewed uncertainty, threatening a major rescue plan involving €595 million from the city. Despite securing new investors, a hotel operator, and a positive building permit, work on the skyscraper has remained stalled for nearly three years at a height of approximately 100 meters.

A central component of the recovery strategy was the plan for the city to acquire part of the completed building to house a new Natural History Museum. However, SPD parliamentary group leader Dirk Kienscherf stated that the likelihood of the museum moving into the Elbtower is currently “very low.”

City officials have noted that negotiations have reached a standstill. Finance Senator Andreas Dressel cited rising interest rates and construction costs as contributing factors to the delay. While the project originally aimed for a 2029 completion, there is currently no scheduled date for the resumption of construction.
