Elderly Patients Rescued After Medical Emergencies in Sicily

A 74‑year‑old man suffered a sudden illness and loss of consciousness while picking fruit in the Milia district of Ragalna, Sicily. The Corpo Nazionale Soccorso Alpino e Speleologico (CNSAS) and the Alpine Rescue unit of the Guardia di Finanza reached him, provided assistance and air‑lifted him to an ambulance that transported him to a hospital for further care.

A 76‑year‑old man from Lipari fractured a vertebra after a fall from about two metres. He spent three days on a stretcher in the island’s emergency department while his family struggled to secure a transfer to a neuro‑surgery centre. After failed attempts to move him to Messina and other hospitals, he was finally air‑lifted by helicopter to the Cannizzaro Hospital in Catania. In a letter to health authorities, his daughter thanked the Lipari staff but complained about the repeated delays, stating, “We felt our father was treated as a problem rather than a patient.”
