Elderly Tourist Dies of Heat Stroke on Ligurian Beach Amid Record Heat

A 74‑year‑old tourist from Lombardy collapsed on the sand at Moneglia beach in the province of Genoa, Liguria, and was pronounced dead after emergency personnel attempted resuscitation. The incident is attributed to a heat‑stroke during Italy’s record‑heat wave, which prompted public assistance troops and 118 emergency services to respond, while police opened an investigation.

The Ministry of Health reported that excess mortality among people over 65 during the late‑May to June heat spell was modest, averaging a 3% increase, mainly affecting those over 85 and cities such as Turin. Heat alert levels 2 and 3 (orange and red) were in force across the country for roughly ten days in the north and centre, and four days in the south, reflecting the severity of the June 2026 heat wave, the second hottest on record in Europe and globally.
