Elderly victims in Taiwan and Hong Kong saved from investment fraud
Authorities and bystanders in Taiwan and Hong Kong have successfully intervened in separate investment fraud attempts targeting elderly individuals.
In Kaohsiung, Taiwan, police prevented a 70-year-old woman from withdrawing 1.3 million TWD in cash. A bank teller became suspicious when the woman provided vague reasons for the withdrawal, claiming it was for home renovations. Upon investigation, officers discovered she had joined an unknown investment group on her mobile phone. Through persuasion, the woman decided not to proceed with the withdrawal.
In Tuen Mun, Hong Kong, a bystander intervened to assist a 78-year-old man at an ATM. The man was attempting to transfer money to a private account following instructions from a WhatsApp group claiming to be related to the Shanghai Futures Exchange. The bystander confronted the scammers and helped the man block the fraudulent contacts, preventing the loss of funds.
