Fraud prevention efforts in Taiwan, China, and Hong Kong
Overview
Authorities in Taiwan, China, and Hong Kong have reported several successful interventions against telecommunications and investment fraud.
In mid-October, police in Taiwan and China prevented various scams. In Changhua, Taiwan, officers stopped a woman from transferring 237,000 TWD under the guise of debt repayment. In Yantai, China, the High-tech Zone Public Security Bureau intercepted two offline transactions involving cash, saving over 90,000 RMB.
Shortly after, reports emerged of fraud attempts specifically targeting elderly individuals. In Kaohsiung, Taiwan, police prevented a 70-year-old woman from withdrawing 1.3 million TWD intended for an unknown investment group. In Tuen Mun, Hong Kong, a bystander assisted a 78-year-old man at an ATM, preventing him from transferring funds to a private account linked to a fraudulent WhatsApp group claiming to be associated with the Shanghai Futures Exchange.
