Eldorado Gold inaugurates major Skouries mine in Greece

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis inaugurated the Eldorado Gold mine in Skouries, Halkidiki, marking what is described as the largest foreign industrial investment in Greece's post-war history. The project, operated through Hellas Gold (Greek Gold), represents an investment exceeding $2 billion.

Once fully operational, the mine is expected to produce 140,000 ounces of gold and 30,000 tons of copper annually. Copper is highlighted as a critical raw material for the green transition, including wind, solar, and electric vehicle industries. The project is expected to have a lifespan of at least 20 years, with ongoing exploration potentially extending this duration.

During the ceremony, Mitsotakis noted that the investment signifies Greece's ability to attract foreign capital with credibility. He also mentioned that the government has commenced its first natural gas extraction in 40 years. The Prime Minister emphasized that strict environmental safeguards and rehabilitation protocols were negotiated to ensure minimal ecological impact. The project currently involves approximately 3,000 direct and indirect employees, with a social investment budget of €80 million allocated to the local community.
