Election Commission of India caps Form-7 voter objections

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has introduced new restrictions on Form-7 applications, which are used by voters to object to the inclusion or deletion of names in electoral rolls. To prevent bulk or unsubstantiated filings that cause administrative burdens and harass genuine voters, the ECI has capped individual submissions at 10 applications during the entire claims and objections period, and five applications per month during continuous roll updates. The commission warned that legal action may be taken against those making knowingly false or fabricated claims.

These regulatory changes come amid significant political unrest and widespread protests across India. The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), a movement that grew from a satirical social media account, has led demonstrations calling for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Protesters allege that recent voter-roll revisions, part of a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process, are being used to disenfranchise voters and manipulate electoral outcomes.

In Delhi, police detained approximately 1,500 people during protests at Jantar Mantar. In Mumbai, demonstrations led to the detention of several individuals, including actor Imran Khan. While the ECI maintains that the revisions are necessary to remove duplicates and errors, critics and activists argue the process lacks transparency and threatens democratic integrity.
