Critics have characterized the alleged manipulation as a ‘democratic massacre’ intended to benefit the BJP.

The Election Commission has defended its procedures. In Uttar Pradesh, the Chief Electoral Officer dismissed claims that voter removal applications were automatically generated as “misleading.” In the Mumbai High Court, the Commission argued that because the SIR is intended to reconstruct lists from scratch, the absence of a name does not necessarily equate to a voter being “removed.”
