Election Commission freezes TMC name and symbol amid factional dispute

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has issued an interim order freezing the use of the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) name and its ‘Flowers and Grass’ election symbol. This decision affects two rival factions: one led by Mamata Banerjee and another led by Ritabrata Banerjee.

The freeze is a temporary measure ahead of the Nandigram and Rejinagar assembly bypolls scheduled for October 6. To ensure the electoral process continues, the ECI has directed both factions to submit three preferred names and three free symbols by 11:00 AM on Friday. The Commission is currently investigating the dispute, which involves the party's organizational structure, leadership, and authorized signatories.

Both factions held meetings with the ECI in New Delhi on Thursday to present their arguments and documentation. While the ECI's decision is interim, it aims to place both groups on an even footing for the upcoming elections until a substantive determination is made under the Election Symbols (Reservation and Allotment) Order, 1968.
