The Election Commission of India (ECI) has intervened to resolve a dispute between two factions of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) regarding the party’s name and its ‘Joraphool’ (twin flowers) election symbol.

On September 12, a five-member delegation from the rebel faction, led by West Bengal Leader of Opposition Ritabrata Banerjee, met with the ECI in New Delhi. This group, which includes Akhruzzaman, Arup Roy, Chandrima Bhattacharya, and Riju Datta, is seeking official recognition as the legitimate leadership of the party. The rebel faction reportedly consists of approximately 60 of the 80 newly elected TMC MLAs who distanced themselves from Mamata Banerjee following the party’s defeat to the BJP in the April Assembly polls.

Both the Mamata Banerjee-led faction and the Ritabrata Banerjee-led faction claim to be the “real” Trinamool Congress, leading to a dispute over the party’s name, election symbol, and funds. The proceedings carry immediate consequences for the Nandigram and Rejinagar Assembly bypolls scheduled for October 6, as both factions intend to field candidates using the TMC symbol. The ECI's final verdict is expected before the September 16 nomination deadline.
