Elections Alberta denies claims of fraudulent mail-in voting
Elections Alberta has addressed viral social media claims suggesting that mail-in voting for the upcoming October 19 referendum is open to non-residents without verification. The claims, which circulated widely on X, alleged that individuals from other provinces could successfully apply for ballots using out-of-province addresses.
Elections Alberta clarified that all special ballot applications are checked against the provincial voter registration system to prevent fraud. The agency noted that proof of identification is required to cast a ballot and that eligible voters must have a “place of ordinary residence” in Alberta.
The referendum will feature 10 questions regarding immigration and Canada’s Constitution, including a central question on whether the province should remain in Canada or initiate a binding referendum on separation.
