South Africa prepares for 2026 local government elections

South Africa is intensifying preparations for the local government elections scheduled for 4 November 2026. The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) recently enforced a deadline of 28 August for political parties and independent candidates to submit their nominations.

Political activity is accelerating as parties finalize their lists. The Umkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party has announced mayoral candidates for six metropolitan municipalities, including Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni, and eThekwini. In Johannesburg, the MKP named Bongani Baloyi as its candidate. Meanwhile, the Democratic Alliance (DA) reported significant fundraising, while the African National Congress (ANC) faced scrutiny regarding the compliance of certain donations under the Political Funding Act.

Public sentiment remains focused on service delivery. In regions like Mabopane and Soshanguve, residents expressed frustration over electricity load reduction, water shortages, and poor road maintenance, signaling that voters may prioritize accountability and efficient local governance in the upcoming polls.
