South Africa 2026 local election rollout
Entities: Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) · Sy Mamabolo · South Africa · Department of Home Affairs · South African Local Government Association
Overview
In late July 2026 the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) noted a surge in party registrations, with 620 parties slated to contest the municipal elections on 4 November. The IEC called for a final voter‑registration weekend on 1‑2 August, urging first‑time voters and those who had moved to update their details. By 1 August the Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister was to proclaim the official election date, and the online registration portal remained open until that proclamation.
During the final weekend the IEC processed more than 238,000 registration transactions, over 99 % of the 23,699 voting stations opening on time. About 13.4 % of the interactions were new registrations – roughly 30,000 voters – with the highest volumes in KwaZulu‑Natal (55,759), the Eastern Cape (46,889) and Gauteng (41,774). An online, data‑free portal logged 20,078 transactions despite occasional delays. The IEC urged citizens to complete registration before the 5 p.m. deadline on Sunday, noting the voter roll will close at midnight on the day the election date is officially proclaimed. A new electoral code of conduct aimed at countering disinformation will be introduced ahead of the November 4 local government elections.
