Electoral reforms and candidate registrations impact Argentina and Ecuador

In Argentina, electoral reform delays are impacting voting calendars across various provinces. Tucumán is scheduled to vote on May 9, while Catamarca will hold elections in October alongside presidential contests. Chaco has become the first province to suspend its Primarias, Abiertas, Sincrónicas y Obligatorias (PASO). In Santa Fe, the legislature approved a reform by Maximiliano Pullaro that allows a single gubernatorial candidacy to run in up to three formulas with different vice-gubernatorial candidates and sets specific thresholds for PASO and general elections. Meanwhile, in San Luis, Claudio Poggi secured legislative support for a constitutional reform that would eliminate mid-term provincial elections and end indefinite reelection.

In Ecuador, the National Electoral Council (CNE) reports that 11,113 candidacies have been officially qualified for the sectional elections scheduled for November 29. This represents approximately 20 percent of the 53,534 total registration requests received through August 17. The highest number of confirmed candidacies is for parish boards, followed by urban and rural council positions. The CNE is currently resolving various challenges filed by political organizations against provincial electoral board resolutions.
