Electric bicycles gain traction as commuter transport in Brazil
Electric bicycles are increasingly being adopted as a primary mode of transport for work and study in Brazil. According to research by Aliança Bike and the Sustainable Mobility Laboratory at UFRJ, 56% of e-bike users who commute for these purposes previously used automobiles. Key drivers for this shift include savings on fuel and parking, reduced time in traffic, and easier parking options.
This rise in micromobility is driving demand for specialized services such as security, tracking, and 24-hour assistance. Companies like ARIDE are expanding to meet this need, providing insurance and monitoring for e-bikes, scooters, and mopeds.
When purchasing used e-bikes, experts recommend inspecting the motor, battery, and availability of spare parts. Essential checks include examining the chain, brake pads, and tires, which tend to wear faster on electric models. It is also advised to test all assistance levels and ensure the motor does not provide illegal assistance above 25 km/h.
