Automotive industry shifts: VW electric plans and BYD market growth
The automotive and caravanning industries are showcasing significant shifts at the Düsseldorf Caravan Salon and through new market trends. Volkswagen is reportedly planning an affordable 20,000-euro electric small car, potentially named the ID Up, with a target launch in 2027. This comes as the company faces scrutiny over technical issues, including a global recall of approximately 94,000 ID-series vehicles due to battery module specifications.
In the leisure vehicle sector, Frankia has introduced the Noctra Liner on a Mercedes-Sprinter chassis as part of a brand realignment. Meanwhile, electric camping options are expanding, including an Alpincamper based on the Kia PV5 and the debut of the VW ID. California Cruise, an electric camper based on the ID. Buzz with a starting price of approximately 60,761 euros.
Market studies indicate a changing landscape for electric vehicle buyers in Germany. While Volkswagen, Audi, and BMW remain the most attractive brands overall, Chinese manufacturer BYD is gaining significant traction among consumers with concrete purchase intentions, seeing a 141 percent increase in new registrations between January and July 2026.
