Electric heavy-duty trucks expanding in Belgium and EU

Electric heavy-duty trucks are transitioning from pilot projects to viable fleet options for transport companies in Belgium and across the European Union. While diesel still dominates the market with a 92% share, electric-powered trucks accounted for 4.8% of new EU truck registrations in the first half of 2026.

In Belgium, heavy electric truck registrations rose to 91 vehicles in the first half of 2026, compared to 75 in the previous year, although medium-weight electric truck volumes saw a decline. For Belgian logistics companies, the transition involves complex considerations including battery capacity, charging infrastructure, grid connections, and route planning.

To support this transition, certain financial incentives are available in 2026, including a 40% thematic investment deduction for emission-free freight transport and an 80% reduction in the infrastructure component of the kilometer charge for heavier emission-free trucks.
