Electric marine propulsion expands from kayaks to high-power commercial vessels
The electric marine propulsion market is expanding into specialized segments, with new developments in both lightweight and high-power outboard motors.
ePropulsion has introduced the kLite 750, an electric outboard designed specifically for the fishing kayak market. Weighing less than 7 kg, the motor features an integrated 378 Wh battery and offers two power modes: a continuous 500 W Go mode and a 750 W Sport Burst mode for navigating currents. The design includes a rudder-shaped configuration for steering and a spring mechanism to prevent propeller lift during reverse maneuvers.
Simultaneously, ExploMar is scaling electric outboard technology toward higher horsepower applications. While much of the current market focuses on small systems, ExploMar is developing motors ranging from 70hp to 300hp for larger recreational boats and commercial vessels. The company has demonstrated its technology in endurance and speed competitions at the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge and has secured orders for electric ferry projects in Nigeria to utilize waterways as an alternative to road transport.
