Electric marine propulsion technology development
Overview
The electric marine propulsion market is diversifying across various vessel types and applications. Initial developments include specialized hardware such as ePropulsion’s kLite 750, a lightweight electric outboard for fishing kayaks, and ExploMar’s work on high-power motors ranging from 70hp to 300hp intended for commercial vessels and electric ferries.
In the United States, these technologies are being applied to coastal resilience and infrastructure. The National Audubon Society has deployed a fully electric passenger pontoon boat in Maine using ePropulsion technology. Additionally, a National Science Foundation-supported project in New York is developing the ‘ChargeBarge’, a mobile 40-kilowatt floating battery platform designed to provide fast charging for electric boats without the need for permanent waterfront infrastructure.
