Electric scooter safety concerns raised in Greece

Traffic expert and former Director of the Attica Region Traffic Management Center, Kimon Logothetis, has raised concerns regarding the safety of electric scooters. He attributes the frequent accidents and injuries, particularly among minors, to both the inherent design of the vehicles and human error.

Logothetis highlights that electric scooters lack essential active safety features found in other vehicles, such as turn signals and mirrors. Furthermore, their small wheels and the upright position of the rider provide virtually zero passive safety in the event of a collision or fall.

A significant issue identified is the lack of theoretical knowledge regarding traffic codes and technical training among users. While recent legislation banning individuals under 17 from using electric scooters is a step in the right direction, Logothetis warns that the primary challenge lies in enforcement. He notes that without systematic inspections, user education, and the ability to identify both the vehicle and the rider, non-compliant behavior is likely to persist.
