Electric Trucks and Port Power Supply Accelerate Cargo Transport Decarbonization
Manufacturers such as Volvo, Mercedes‑Benz, Scania, MAN, Renault, DAF, Freightliner, Kenworth, Peterbilt, International, BYD and Tesla are expanding electric‑truck line‑ups and improving battery range, charging speed and payload capacity. Operators cite lower electricity costs and reduced maintenance compared with diesel, especially for urban and regional distribution where trucks can return to depots nightly for charging. Early deployments by e‑commerce and retail logistics firms show competitive productivity while cutting emissions and noise.
In Europe, new regulations require ships to plug into onshore power supply (OPS) by 2030, shutting off auxiliary diesel engines while at berth. Implementing OPS entails extensive grid upgrades, substation construction, automation and digital control systems, and continuous 24‑hour operation. The move is framed as essential for meeting air‑quality targets, reducing port‑city noise, and maintaining the competitiveness of European ports in global supply chains.
