Electric vehicle adoption grows in India amid World EV Day 2026

World EV Day 2026, observed on September 9, focuses on the theme ‘Switching Electric: driving down the cost of motoring.’ The seventh annual campaign aims to promote electric mobility by addressing consumer affordability rather than focusing solely on environmental benefits.

In India, electric vehicle (EV) adoption is seeing significant growth. Data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (FADA) indicates that approximately 298,448 electric vehicles were sold in August 2026, representing a year-on-year increase of over 52.9 percent.

An independent total-cost-of-ownership (TCO) analysis by the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW) highlights the economic advantages of the transition. For two-wheelers, electric models cost ₹1.48 per km to own and operate, compared to ₹2.46 per km for petrol versions. The savings are even more pronounced for three-wheelers, with electric costs at ₹1.28 per km versus ₹3.21 per km for petrol vehicles. These figures account for the full lifecycle, including purchase price, fuel, maintenance, insurance, and resale value.
