India is experiencing significant growth in its energy, electric vehicle (EV), and manufacturing sectors. Recent data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (FADA) shows significant momentum, with approximately 298,448 EVs sold in August 2026, a year-on-year increase of over 52.9 percent.

Economic viability is a key driver; a Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW) analysis found that electric two-wheelers cost ₹1.48 per km to operate compared to ₹2.46 for petrol, while three-wheelers cost ₹1.28 per km versus ₹3.21 for petrol. However, the transition faces financial hurdles, as traditional banking models may struggle with EV-specific risks like uncertain resale values. Specialized non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) may be required to better underwrite these assets.

Regional infrastructure and modernization efforts continue. In Gujarat, railway projects valued at over Rs 1,542 crore include the country’s first LNG-powered train, capable of replacing up to 40 per cent of diesel use, alongside the Kavach automatic train protection system. In Himachal Pradesh, the Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) plans to induct 1,000 electric buses. In Delhi, the government is reviewing welfare for contractual bus drivers and planning approximately 300 police posts at subways and flyovers to enhance public safety. Meanwhile, in Kerala, despite a 28.5 percent rise in EV registrations in 2025, experts note that vehicles are being added to roads faster than older models are being replaced.
