Electric vehicle adoption rises in Sweden and Denmark

The electric vehicle market is seeing significant growth across Northern Europe. In Sweden, new car sales rose by 13.4 percent in August 2026, with the private market driving a 21.3 percent increase in deliveries. Electric vehicles accounted for 45.5 percent of all new passenger car registrations in Sweden during August, a notable segment of the 68 percent total share for rechargeable vehicles. Volvo led the Swedish electric market with a 16 percent share, followed by Kia and Volkswagen.

In the Lyngby-Taarbæk municipality of Denmark, electric vehicles have become the dominant choice for private buyers. During the first half of 2026, electric cars made up 93.5 percent of all new passenger car registrations for private households, representing a 20.7 percent increase compared to the same period in 2025. This shift has coincided with a sharp decline in gasoline-powered vehicle registrations, which fell by 72.4 percent in the same period.
