Divergent Nordic EV market trends and policy impacts
Overview
The electric vehicle (EV) market across the Nordic region continues to show divergent trends driven by varying national taxation and subsidy policies.
In Sweden, market growth has shown signs of recent acceleration. While earlier data for the first half of 2026 indicated a slowdown, August 2026 saw new car sales rise by 13.4 percent, with electric vehicles accounting for 45.5 percent of all new passenger car registrations. This contributed to a 68 percent total share for rechargeable vehicles. Volvo led the Swedish electric market with a 16 percent share, followed by Kia and Volkswagen.
Recent data highlights a shift in the Swedish used car market, where a shortage of electric vehicles has emerged. According to Blocket, dealers are selling nearly twice as many used EVs as they are acquiring, resulting in a 44 percent decrease in inventory since the start of the Strait of Hormuz conflict. This scarcity has caused used EV prices to rise by approximately 5 percent since June, reversing a previous downward trend. The Tesla Model Y remains the most sold used EV in Sweden, with 673 units sold in August.
Other Nordic nations maintain different trajectories. Denmark has seen high adoption due to aggressive taxation on fossil fuel vehicles and tax relief for electric models. In the Lyngby-Taarbæk municipality, electric cars made up 93.5 percent of new passenger car registrations for private households in the first half of 2026, a 20.7 percent increase from 2025. This shift coincided with a 72.4 percent decline in gasoline-powered vehicle registrations in the same municipality. Finland has also reported growth, with fully electric vehicles making up 48.3 percent of new registrations between January and July 2026.
