Electric Vehicle Batteries Retain Over 80% Capacity After Eight Years, BYD Unveils Atto 3 Evo
Analysis of data from more than 22,700 electric cars across 21 models shows that battery capacity declines at an average rate of 2.3 % per year. After eight years of typical use, a vehicle still holds roughly 81 % of its original capacity, comfortably above the 70 % level most manufacturers use for warranty guarantees. Other studies corroborate the finding, reporting 97 % range retention after three years and 95 % after five years, while Tesla’s fleet maintains 88‑90 % after 30,000 miles. Battery wear is accelerated by high temperatures, frequent fast‑charging (over 100 kW), and keeping the pack at 100 % state of charge. Experts advise daily charging between 20 % and 80 % to maximise longevity.
Meanwhile, BYD has launched the Atto 3 Evo, a refreshed version of its best‑selling compact EV. The update adds a more powerful drivetrain – 308 hp in the standard Evo and up to 449 hp in the top‑spec Excellence trim – and introduces all‑wheel‑drive in the higher‑output variant. Exterior tweaks include a revised front air intake and new wheel designs, while the interior sees a slimmer steering column, a new single‑lever gear selector, upgraded seats with adjustable neck support, and a redesigned steering wheel. The vehicle also supports higher charging rates, addressing one of the key factors that affect battery health.
