Overview
An early July 2026 analysis of more than 600 U.S. electric vehicles found that battery capacity declines gradually, retaining about 95% of range under 50,000 miles and dropping to roughly 85% beyond 200,000 miles. The study noted an average annual degradation of 2.3% and a low replacement rate, yet battery concerns were linked to a 28% year-over-year drop in U.S. EV sales.
A later August 2026 report expanded the dataset to over 22,700 cars across 21 models worldwide, confirming a similar degradation pace of about 2.3% per year. After eight years of typical use, batteries still hold roughly 81% of their original capacity, comfortably above the 70% warranty threshold. The report highlighted accelerated wear from high temperatures, frequent fast-charging, and full-charge storage, and advised daily charging between 20% and 80% for longevity. It also announced BYD’s launch of the Atto 3 Evo, featuring a more powerful drivetrain, all-wheel-drive options, and higher charging rates, addressing some of the identified stress factors.
A Swedish study involving nearly 10,000 battery tests of vehicles sold between 2022 and 2026 further supports these findings. Using diagnostic tools to measure actual health rather than software estimates, the study found most vehicles retained over 90% capacity after 100,000 kilometers. Top performers included the Kia e-Niro (97.25%), Hyundai Kona (97.18%), and Volvo XC40 (94.70%). Tesla’s Model 3 with a CATL LFP battery retained 93.34%, while Audi, Škoda, and Volkswagen models all remained above 92%.
Further long-term testing by the German automobile club ADAC on a Volkswagen ID. 3 showed the vehicle retained 89% capacity after 220,000 kilometers of heavy use, including frequent rapid charging. This represents a degradation rate of approximately 1% for every 22,000 kilometers, significantly exceeding manufacturer warranty thresholds.
