Electric vehicle charging costs vary by payment method
Electric vehicle owners often face varying costs for the same amount of electricity at public charging stations. According to a TÜV Mobility study, 49 percent of surveyed EV owners find public charging prices to be non-transparent, while 48 percent view the diverse payment systems as a challenge.
Total costs are determined by more than just the price per kilowatt-hour. Factors include whether a user utilizes a specific charging card, a mobile app, roaming services, or spontaneous ad-hoc charging. Ad-hoc charging without prior registration applies the station operator's specific price, whereas charging cards follow the user's contracted tariff. While roaming expands the available network, it can lead to higher expenses.
Additional fees may also apply, such as start-up fees, time-based charges per minute, or blocking fees for staying parked too long. Experts recommend that frequent users compare tariffs based on their typical routes and locations, such as home or work, to determine if a monthly base fee is offset by lower per-unit costs. For occasional users, models without monthly fees may be more economical.
