Electric vehicle charging efficiency and infrastructure updates

A study by ADAC examining five electric vehicles has revealed significant differences in charging efficiency depending on the power source. Charging via a standard household socket (2.3 kW) resulted in the highest energy losses across all tested models. The Mercedes-Benz CLA EQ showed the highest loss at 24.2 percent, while other vehicles averaged around 15 percent loss when using a socket.

In contrast, using a wallbox is considerably more efficient. Charging at maximum power (11 kW or 22 kW) kept energy losses below seven percent for all vehicles, with the Renault R5 noted as particularly efficient. Charging with excess solar power, even at reduced speeds, also proved more efficient than socket charging, with losses remaining under 13 percent.

Separately, retailers like Lidl are expanding electric vehicle infrastructure. Lidl currently offers charging stations at approximately 700 locations, often featuring fast-charging capabilities up to 360 kW. Customers using the Lidl Plus app and Lidl Pay can access discounted green electricity rates, though charging sessions are limited to one hour per vehicle to align with typical shopping durations.
