Electric vehicle charging lacks cost transparency in France and Italy

Electric vehicle users in France and Italy are facing significant challenges regarding the transparency of charging costs. Unlike traditional gasoline refueling, where costs are immediately visible, many EV charging stations do not provide real-time pricing information.

Reports highlight that while users may receive data regarding charging time, kilowatt-hours delivered, range added, and CO2 saved, the final monetary amount is often only disclosed after the session is complete. This lack of immediate feedback is particularly problematic during high-speed charging, where costs can accumulate rapidly, and during slow AC charging, where many stations lack screens entirely.

While some providers such as Tesla, Electra, and Engie offer real-time cost displays, they remain the exception. In Italy, providers like Hera and Enel X follow a similar model where the price is communicated and debited after the fact, leaving consumers to wait for bank statements to confirm their total expenditure.
