European electric vehicle market sees rapid growth amid range transparency concerns

The European electric vehicle (EV) market is undergoing significant shifts in consumer behavior, technology, and regulation. In July 2026, battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales in Europe grew by 51% year-on-year, reaching nearly 280,000 units and capturing a 24.9% market share. Top-selling models include the Skoda Elroq, Volkswagen ID.4, and Renault 5 E-Tech.

However, concerns regarding transparency persist. European MEP Jean-Paul Garraud has raised questions with the European Commission regarding the discrepancy between WLTP laboratory range tests and real-world performance. Data from TNO indicates the gap between WLTP and actual range increased from 13% in 2020 to 22% in 2024. Additionally, studies on used EVs suggest that approximately 1 in 85 vehicles may harbor hidden battery cell imbalances that impact range and charging.

Regulatory changes are also emerging. New EU directives will allow drivers who passed their practical test in an automatic vehicle to transition to manual driving after completing seven hours of additional training, rather than retaking the full exam. Meanwhile, consumer research shows the 'typical' EV driver profile is disappearing, replaced by diverse groups ranging from pragmatic researchers to status-oriented buyers. Technical advancements continue, such as research into using titanium in bipolar lead-acid batteries to improve durability.
