EV consumer profiles and European market growth
Overview
Research into electric vehicle (EV) adoption highlights a growing diversification in consumer profiles and charging requirements across Europe. A survey in the Czech Republic identified six distinct driver profiles, while a German study identified four specific charging personas ranging from pragmatic seekers to price-conscious drivers.
By late 2026, the European market experienced rapid expansion. In August, battery electric vehicle (BEV) registrations across 16 major markets reached 200,833, representing a 54.2 percent increase compared to the same period the previous year. This growth pushed the market share for fully electric cars to 30.5 percent. For the first eight months of the year, total BEV registrations in Europe reached 1,673,856, a 33.1 percent increase over the previous year.
While Germany and France showed strong registration growth, with August market shares of 32.5 percent and 38.3 percent respectively, Northern European nations maintained higher adoption rates. Norway led with a 98.7 percent market share, followed by Denmark at 85.9 percent and Finland at 52.3 percent.
Despite this momentum, the industry faces regulatory and structural challenges. The European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA) is urging the EU and UK to delay stricter ‘rules of origin’ for batteries set for 2027. Manufacturers warn that failure to delay these rules could result in tariffs on vehicles not meeting specific European component requirements, potentially costing the industry 1.5 billion euros annually.
Additional market shifts include Škoda considering model changes as part of a broader trend toward SUVs and electric models. In the secondary market, analysis from VavaCars indicates that average second-hand sales prices for EVs are currently 20.3 percent lower than new model list prices, influenced by battery health, mileage, and tax structures. This follows reports from Sweden regarding rapid declines in used EV inventory.
