Multiple fires reported across Germany and Austria
Several significant fire incidents occurred across Germany and Austria over the weekend of October 17-18, 2026.
In Bochum-Harpen, Germany, a residential house was completely destroyed by a major fire on Saturday evening. All residents and two dogs managed to escape before firefighters arrived, though a neighbor was hospitalized with mild smoke inhalation. Due to the risk of collapse, emergency crews had to fight the flames from the outside using ladders.
In Berneck, Switzerland, near the Austrian border, an electric vehicle caught fire in an industrial parking lot on Friday. The car was completely destroyed, resulting in property damage worth tens of thousands of francs. While the 29-year-old owner was uninjured, the fire required specialized containment to prevent extinguishing water from contaminating nearby water sources.
Other regional incidents included a kitchen fire at a farm shop in Prambachkirchen, Austria, which left two people slightly injured, and a fire in Klagenfurt, Austria, where a homeowner was injured during an attempt to extinguish a shed fire. In Pottenstein, Germany, a vehicle fire on a public parking lot caused approximately 5,000 euros in damage.
