Electric vehicle fire safety and battery risks
Electric vehicle (EV) fire safety is a growing concern as the use of lithium-ion powered vehicles increases across various sectors, including personal mobility, commercial trucks, and heavy machinery. The primary cause of these fires is malfunctions within the battery packs, often leading to a process known as ‘thermal runaway’ caused by excessive heat, electrical faults, or mechanical damage.
Berkan Bayram, President of the Türkiye Electric and Hybrid Vehicles Association (TEHAD), notes that while public debate regarding EV fire risks is high, data suggests these vehicles are safe when properly maintained. According to Bayram, statistics show 25 fire incidents per 100,000 vehicles for electric cars, compared to 1,530 for internal combustion engine vehicles and 3,475 for hybrid vehicles.
To mitigate risks, battery packs are typically housed in armored outer shells and protected by specialized cooling systems. Experts emphasize that maintaining battery integrity is crucial; physical damage to the undercarriage, unauthorized repairs to high-voltage systems, and the use of non-original parts can compromise safety systems. Drivers are advised to seek professional inspection immediately if the battery housing sustains any impact.
