Electric vehicle growth and environmental impact in France
In France, electric vehicle (EV) registrations saw significant growth in September 2026. While passenger EV registrations increased by 107.5% compared to the previous year, electric light commercial vehicles (up to 3.5 tonnes) grew by 7.9%, reaching 3,879 units. This growth in the utility sector occurs alongside a decline in diesel and gasoline registrations.
A study by ADEME has addressed the environmental impact of electric vehicles. According to ADEME President Sylvain Waserman, an electric vehicle is ‘2.25 times less impactful in terms of carbon than a hybrid vehicle.’ The research indicates that over its entire life cycle, an EV's carbon footprint in France is halved compared to internal combustion engine vehicles, largely due to the country's low-carbon electricity supply.
The study notes that batteries account for nearly half of an EV's carbon footprint. However, this impact can be reduced by 15% to 25% if battery manufacturing is relocated to regions with low-carbon electricity. For a standard compact car with a 60 kWh battery, the carbon debt is typically amortized after approximately 70,000 km.
