Electric vehicle registration rates show regional disparities in Germany and Austria

Electric vehicle (EV) registration trends show significant regional variations across Germany and Austria. In Germany, Rheinland-Pfalz leads with a 33.1 percent share of new registrations being purely electric, followed closely by Schleswig-Holstein at 32.6 percent. Conversely, Hamburg reports the lowest share among German federal states at 16.9 percent. Despite these disparities, all German states saw an increase in EV shares compared to the previous year.

In Austria, EV adoption reached a milestone in September, with electric cars accounting for one-third of all new registrations nationwide. Upper Austria recorded the highest regional share at 42 percent, while Burgenland also exceeded the 40 percent mark. Styria recorded the lowest share in Austria at 27 percent. Experts from the Verkehrsclub Österreich (VCÖ) note that interest in EVs is rising in rural areas due to the prevalence of second cars and residential photovoltaic systems. However, Austria still trails significantly behind European leaders like Denmark and Norway.
